How to Bust Those Spring Fish – Including Bass and Panfish
Here it is March and the weather is starting to warm up. With the rising temperatures its time to head out and hit the water to bust those spring fish. Several factors come into play when angling for the big one. These include weather, bait, tackle and your skill.
Here we are going to discuss one aspect of the Fly Tackle and arguable the most important part of it. That is going to be fly fishing reels and rods. This is list of five of the best rods and reels and they are broken into smaller categories.
Fly Reel
A fly reel functions a bit differently than the other reel types. When using a fly reel you do not cast the line in the normal sense. First you strip the line off of the reel until you have the desired length, then using an extremely flexible rod you whip the line back and forth as you slowly extend out the line, you then drop the bait, a fly in this case in the spot that you are targeting.
Retrieving the fish is done by gripping the line with your rod hand. As you pull back on the rod you grip the line with your off hand. You then lower the tip of the rod towards the fish as you quickly pull the line with your off hand and then grip the line again in your rod hand. Immediately begin pulling the rod back up. You want to maintain tension so the hook does not slip out. Once the fish reaches the shore or boat you grab it with a fish net.
Fly rods tend to use a larger line in order to facilitate you grabbing the line. These lines also tend to be brightly colored. The reel is primarily used only to store the line once your finished or to adjust the amount of line you have out.
Now the Breakdown
Now I will get into the discussion of the rods. To avoid hurting anyone’s feelings I will not be using stars or numbers to rate them. I will simply place them in the order that I feel they belong. Each listing will also include a low med or high entry for the price. This corresponds to low being under $50. Medium being between $50 and $150. High being anything over $150.
